Insurance for Kamloops homes and drivers
Kamloops sits in some of the most active wildfire country in BC, and it's the junction for the Coquihalla. Both shape what your home and vehicle coverage should look like.
What's different about insuring here
- A run of big fires. In 2021 the Sparks Lake fire burned about 96,000 hectares northwest of the city, and the Tremont Creek fire came within about 13 km of city limits. In 2017 the Elephant Hill fire, which started near Ashcroft, burned more than 190,000 hectares.
- Coverage before fire season. Insurers usually pause new policies and increases when a fire is close. Evacuation living costs are covered by many policies, up to a limit.
- The Coquihalla. Kamloops drivers use one of the province's main mountain passes, a winter tire route from October 1.
- New tax rules. Kamloops joined the Speculation and Vacancy Tax area from 2024, and the principal residence rule applies to short term rentals.

Questions people ask me
Can I get insurance during an evacuation alert?
Usually not for new coverage. Arrange it before fire season.
What does my policy pay if I'm evacuated?
Many pay extra living costs up to a limit. I'll show you yours.
Do I need winter tires on the Coquihalla?
Yes, from October 1. Check DriveBC for the end date.
Do I have to declare for the vacancy tax?
If you own residential property in Kamloops, yes. Owners declare every year, starting with the 2024 tax year, even though most residents are exempt.
